Paying for the Weekend

Monday, June 25, 2007 2 comments

We had a great weekend. The weather was lovely and we hosted a back yard BBQ for Chloe's playgroup and their parents. The weekend didn't get off to a good start. Matt went out of town in the week to Dallas. Yes, he went to MY hometown, the one we got moved from for his work, only to have him return on a business trip and stay at my parents' house while I was here in Jersey. Anyway, my anger causes me to digress. He was to return Friday at 6:30 p.m. but due to the high winds at Newark, the airport had to go to only one runway causing a backup and a two hour delayed take-off from Dallas. So, I bath Chloe Friday night, put her in her PJ's and pull-up, call the airline to see when Matt's flight will now arrive to be told 8:38 p.m. I load Chloe in the car with a sippy cup of milk and head out to get Matt. During the drive, I call the airline again (because I am anal) just to check the flight arrival time again. It was now 9:03 p.m. arrival. I get to the airport at 8:55 p.m. and have to cruise for 10 minutes until I can pull up to the gate to get Matt. At 9:10 p.m. I attempt to call Matt. It goes instantly to voice mail, a giveaway that he has not landed. I call the airline again. This time I am re-routed to a person because the computer tells me there is no information on this flight (yes, I had instant panic set in. Is it REALLY good for an airline to tell you that the "flight information is missing" for that flight and will transfer you to a service rep. for the information. Now tell me, what would your first thought be for a flight that has gone missing?). Mike, the rep., comes on to tell me that the flight will be arriving at 10:00 p.m. causing me to go into a tirade that they could have shared this information a little earlier and that I didn't appreciate the computer telling me that the flight information was missing on this flight. While I am telling this to Mike, my other line beeps, it's Matt. I hang up on Mike by clicking over to discover Matt's flight has landed not at Newark but at JFK. He thinks they are going to refuel and then go back in the air for the 2 minute flying time to Newark and that I should sit tight. GREAT. That's real easy to do with a toddler who has to pee in the back seat and the airport police yelling at you to keep moving and don't stop unless your picking up passengers from their bull horn.(Well, technically I was picking up a passenger, he was just at JFK right now).

So, I cruise to every New Jerseyan's favorite donut shop and get a coffee and a pee for the wee one. As I am pulling out, wondering where I should go now, Matt phones to tell me to pick him up JFK. I enter it into the GPS and thanks to the airline, Chloe and I get a tour of the parts of greater NYC that you hear about but don't ever really want to visit. We crossed the Goethals Bridge to Staten Island then back over the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge to Brooklyn, passed Coney Island, onto Long Island and JFK. It was 34 miles hike past roads and place names that I know but don't know why I know them.

In the end, we picked up Matt and arrived home at 12:35 a.m., six hours later than planned. We put an already asleep Chloe to bed and Matt updated me on his time in Big D. We got to be around 2 a.m.

Understandably, we were a dragging a but Saturday morning but we had a list of things to do. Our first objective of the weekend was to buy the needed supplies for Sunday's cook out. We planned to put on an authentic Texas-style BBQ with an assortment of smoked goodies. That meant searching for a brisket. Brisket can be easy to find in NJ, unfortunately it is Corned Beef Brisket. Say it ain't so! We went to the specialty grocer and placed an order to be picked up later that day. While at the market, Matt had the idea to grill some ribs (like he had at MY parents house in the week). I thought it was a great idea so we bought them.

We went to the bicycle store with then purpose of buying a bike rack/hitch for the SUV. We managed to tick that one of the list, and quite affordably too. We did manage to get suckered into buying one very cute little girl a pink bicycle with some pretty cool accessories. Chloe loves her bike and it gives her a reason to run around in her bike helmet. She wore is to dance in the basement and she even tried to nap in it.
While Chloe was napping I ran to the store for some other items while Matt checked out the grill and why it was no longer lighting. He discovered that the bottom had completely rotted and the gas valves had falled through rendering it useless. Since you can't have a back yard BBQ without the BBQ, we went out to buy another grill. Since we had to have the grill right then, we had to bring the grill home and assemble it. This threw a kink in our plans of grilling the ribs and we opted for sandwiches instead. The rest of the evening had me prepping for the cook out and mixing up my own special seasonings for the bratwursts, pork butt and brisket and rubbing it on and marinating all night.

Sunday was the BBQ and all had a good time. The kids played and we actually got in some adult conversation. I made a champagne sangria that rendered me unable to take photographs, so my apologies for no cute kiddie pics with gratuitous shots of some really good BBQ. Everyone was impressed with the meats and I think Matt may have convinced the 2 other Dads to purchase a big ole smoker too.

Today, I am dealing with a pile of dirty dishes, a sangria headache (as Matt and I stayed outside after all had gone home and the Chloester went to bed), a pile of laundry and a messy patio and sandbox to clean up. To add to these Monday Blues, my eyeglasses broke and cannot be repaired and I broke a nail (that one really sucks!). I'm glad we had fun because we will be paying it off for a while.

The Week In Review

T

he week began with Chloe and I driving south to Washington, D.C. to meet my sister, Deanna. Deanna was on assignment at a national park and Chloe and I picked her up to take her back to NJ for the week.

We attempted to tour D.C. on Friday, June 8, but it was ridiculously hot and humid and we didn't last long. We were able to get a few photos in at some of the landmark sights.

On Saturday, June 9, BeBe arrived from Dallas. We picked her up at the airport and then went to our block party. Chloe only got out of the bounce house long enough to play with the bubbles.

On Tuesday Chloe had her birthday celebration on the last day of pre-school. I made monkey cupcakes for the event and served as the co-oping mom for the day. BeBe and Aunt Deanna also got to come and witness 7 toddlers in a pre-school class.

For Chloe's birthday, Aunt Deanna and BeBe bought Chloe a trampoline. She adores it as she just LOVES to hop, hop, hop. Chloe freaked when she saw the trampoline box in the back yard. She begged for us to put it together. After it was assembled and tested, Chloe got to give it a try. Since the trampoline has been in the yard, Chloe wakes up and her first words are, "Do you want to go bounce?". She LOVES it.

--Bouncing on the trampoline.

Thursday we all celebrated Chloe's birthday in the city (see post below). We had a great week and we were happy that BeBe and Aunt Deanna could help us celebrate Chloe's 3rd birthday.

P.S. If you are ever in NYC and are a foodie, be sure to take this tour. BeBe, Deanna and I took it on Sunday and really enjoyed it.

Happy 3rd Birthday Chloe!!!--The day in pictures

Today is Chloe’s 3rd birthday. Chloe has planned and has been anticipating this day for some months. We made sure we followed her wishes.

The day started out with BeBe striking up a rousing rendition of “Happy Birthday” and Chloe getting an 8 a.m. (that’s 7 a.m. CST) phone call from PaPaw followed by another call from Nana in England.

At 9:30 a.m. we set out for our Mommy & Me party. We stayed there for a little while then gathered up the family (BeBe, Aunt Deanna, Daddy, Chloe and I) to go into NYC to celebrate.

Chloe’s 1st wish was to ride the ferry boat across the Hudson into NYC. After we arrived in the city we were famished so we took a cab ride to one of our fav’s to have a spot of tea and lunch. Chloe was declared by none other than the owner to be "WB" (well-behaved). After Aunt Deanna discovered why I am so in love with the British dessert sticky toffee pudding, we digressed from the All About Chloe day to detour here to pick up a souvenir for Deanna. We were quick to get back to Chloe's birthday schedule so we hailed a cab and headed to Central Park where we completed Chloe's 2nd wish by taking her on a horse-drawn carriage ride around the park. Chloe selected Sultan to take us around the park.We then met Nigel (Matt's co-worker and a Chloe fav) outside FAO Schwarz to say "hello" and to allow Matt to conduct some business. We then headed to the Central Park Zoo to take a quick gander at the animals. Chloe enjoyed watching the two polar bears and checking out the chin-strap penguins and fruit bats.
After the zoo, we jumped on the subway back to the ferry. Chloe was hungry so we ate at P.F. Changs (a Chloe fav).

Chloe was worn out from her big day in the city and fell asleep in the car. We had to wake her up to sing "Happy Birthday", blow out the 3 candles on her cake and open a few presents. It was a big day for the Chloester.

Beauty Salon

Tuesday, June 05, 2007 2 comments

Chloe had photos taken at JC Penney yesterday for her upcoming 3rd birthday. During the photo shoot, she had all sorts of stray hairs that were driving me crazy. After the photos were taken, I went next door to the salon and got my hair cut and asked to have Chloe's cleaned up. They cut our hair at the same time. I was done 45 minutes before Chloe.

Two of the stylists "teamed" up on Chloe because they thought she was adorable and so well-mannered. They curled and styled her hair in ringlets. It was really cute - I jus wished I had gone to the hair salon BEFORE the photos. Chloe just sat in the chair and let them play with her hair. After cutting and styling her hair she charged me for a kids cut. I think Chloe has her own hair stylist now.

Memorial Day Weekend

Monday, May 28, 2007 No comments
We had a relaxing weekend. We worked in the yard, grilled, Matt played some golf, etc. Chloe had fun playing in the sprinklers and eating bagels (that's all she wanted to eat all weekend).

We watered the yard and Chloe played in the sprinklers, with some coaxing from Daddy.

Outdoor Fun

This weekend we went and picked up Chloe's birthday present - a playhouse. I had searched the internet for a playhouse that could withstand a couple of NJ winters and that would be large enough for mommy to enter and to "cook" in the playhouse with Chloe. I narrowed my search down to two playhouses. After checking out prices, I couldn't believe the cost of a giant piece of plastic! I was able to search ebay and find the playhouses I wanted at half the cost. We ended up purchasing a playhouse that is about 7'x7' from a family in CT who had purchased it for their sons a year ago. Turns out the little boys preferred their sandbox. We had to rent a trailer to haul the playhouse. While Matt was dismantling the playhouse to fit in the trailer, Chloe jumped on the trampoline with the 2 boys. As we were leaving, the youngest son (who was a little older than Chloe) asked if we lived far and could Chloe come back to play. It was really cute.

Chloe is really enjoying the playhouse and loves to ring the doorbell and talk on the phone. There is a little table and 2 chairs inside. Hopefully she will get lots of enjoyment out of it.

Since the weather has been really nice and Chloe and I are outside most of the day, we ran up to the toy store and got some outside games. The store had one remaining 3-hole toddler golf course and as someone who once taught pre-schoolers/elementary kids golf fundamentals, I had to get it for Chloe. I set it up in the yard today and showed Chloe how to play. It will be great to work on some coordination and she definitely takes after Matt in her approach to golf (see her moving the ball closer to the hole with her hands? Her Daddy would call that a "give-me").

Scotland

We unexpectedly went to Scotland last week. Matt's much beloved grandfather passed away and we went for the funeral. He lived outside Glasgow. While we wished for better circumstances, we got to spend some quality time with Matt's mother (Chloe's Nana)and Matt's brother, Rob. Matt's grandfather was a patron of the arts and enjoyed painting the Scottish countryside. We were able to take a road trip through the countryside to some scenic spots which Matt & Rob enjoyed going to with their grandad.

Which Jane Austen Character are You Like?

Saturday, May 05, 2007 No comments
I saw this quiz on another blog and as a Jane Austen fan I just had to take it. Now, I can tell Matt that there is a good reason why I make him suffer through the BBC version of "Pride & Prejudice" and the latest Keira Knightley version. I wonder if this means Matt is my Mr. Darcy?

Forever Family Day

Friday, May 04, 2007 3 comments

May 8, 2007 will be the anniversary of our "Gotcha/Metcha" Day. On that date, Chloe will have been a part of our family for 2 years.

Donna over at Double Happiness has a weekly photo challenge for bloggers in the China adoptive community and this week her challenge was to photograph your child in the clothes he or she was wearing on "Gotcha/Metcha" Day for some then and now pictures. Since our Forever Family Day is coming up this next week I thought it was a great idea and had to participate.

Putting the clothes back on Chloe was more emotional than I thought it would be. It brought back all the memories of seeing her in the flesh for the first time - remembering how beautiful & tiny she was, how much hair she had and how it was as stiff as a board, how she wouldn't look us in the eye, how worn and stained her clothes were. I remember how big the outfit was on her in 2005 but was shocked when it actually fit her still. Chloe was 10 months old on Gotcha Day and today she is 34 months old. She weighed about 17 lbs. on Gotcha and is about 31 lbs. today.

Rocks in MY Dryer

Monday, April 30, 2007 No comments
It's official...Chloe IS a toddler through and through. I washed her clothes last night and heard the worst racket coming from the washer. Inside the pockets of her clothing she had stashed - a book (still a mystery as to where that was hiding & how it got in the washer), a stretchy frog she received at a birthday party, my old cell phone she carries around in a pocket (its no stranger to the washer - it died because it was accidentally washed before), and 7 rocks. I didn't get all the rocks out of the washer and only discovered the others when they were in the dryer.
So, from now on I will have to begin the pocket search through Chloe's clothes before washing.

Plumb Tired

Friday, April 27, 2007 No comments

I am worn out with our plumbing issues in our house. Back in February
we received a hefty bill to re-plumb our kitchen to prevent it from backing up. Well, while I was making dinner last night guess what our kitchen sink did again? It overflowed because it wasn't draining AGAIN!!

I immediately called our plumbers who came out early this morning. First thing they told me is that their work is covered for 30 days, since the work was completed in over 30 days ago, they would bill me again. I am usually an extremely passive person, but something inside me could not remain passive anymore. I flipped! I realize we have 80 year old pipes and you get problems more regularly. But, did I pay them a lot of money to tear out a wall and re-plumb my kitchen to avoid this very problem? After tinkering in the kitchen sink for an hour, I was told they were going to put in a call to the experts. EXPERTS--what are you? (I flipped again). After another hour, the expert showed up--Mr. Rooter. (Mr. Rooter is the expert?) I could feel a blood vessel in my head bulging and ready to snap.

Mr. Rooter, rooted around in the sink and after a few expletives told me this wasn't going to be easy. After an expletive back, "NO SH*@!", he set out to tell me that the blockage is somewhere deep in the pipe, somewhere in the basement. And, when our basement was finished, they covered the clean out drain and he has no idea where it is. Clean out drain!? I have an idea. Our plumbers (the non-experts) sheet-rocked over it when they "fixed" this problem the first time. So, out goes the wall, again. The expert keeps going up and down the basement stairs telling me "this is really a mystery! It would probably be easier if your basement weren't finished". Not the reassuring words I expect from "the expert".

If we weren't having to pay out the nose for all this work, I would just laugh at the absurdity of it all.

Well, the expert can laugh all the way to the bank as I just cut another check for an obscenely ridiculous amount. We are only missing half a wall in our basement now and it is still a mystery where our kitchen sink drains. The expert tried to reassure me with, "well, at least we know it drains to the main line. Don't worry too much, everything in your town is old. Everybody has problems like this." Somehow, that statement didn't help. I don't feel better knowing that all my neighbors have to add "plumbing" into their monthly expenses like we now do. All that statement told me is that plumbers make a killing in this area.

Chloe Potty Trains Mommy

Tuesday, April 24, 2007 No comments
Since this site is "All About Chloe" I must brag on our child to declare that she is out of pull-ups and into underwear! Yes, I can admit that I finally bit the bullet and admitted that it was I who was holding back my child's potty training success. Perhaps I wanted to hold on to the "infant" stage just a little longer or perhaps I am incredibly lazy and found running errands with a child in a pull-up was easier than leaving the shopping cart of groceries in the middle of the store to seek out the toilet. Perhaps it is a bit of both.

I am happy to say that I came to this realization this weekend after reading an article on potty training in "Toddler" magazine and after a conversation with Chloe that went something like this:

Chloe: "Mommy I am so proud of you!"
Me: "Why are you proud of me Chloe?"
Chloe: "Because you wear big girl panties and use the potty like Claire."

Claire is a 3-year old friend of Chloe's. Hmmm, I thought, she's ready, stop being a slack mom and put her in the underwear. So, Monday Chloe picked out a pair of panties and off we went. Only one accident while playing in the backyard. But, today was the true test. Tuesdays are busy in and out days for us. We have Mommy & Me and Pre-school.

I am slowly realizing that I can very easily become one of those helicopter mother's hovering above her child, the one's who worry about everything and fear their child cannot succeed without them butting into every aspect of their life. I know those mom's want the best for their child, and hey I want what's best for Chloe too. So, perhaps that is why I had the fear that she would have an accident in class today and be forever traumatized. I was simply neurotic in hovering above my child asking every 5 minutes, "Do you need to go potty?". Lucky for Chloe our Mommy & Me instructor had an intervention reassuring me that Chloe would be ok and to lighten up. She told me all kids have accidents, Chloe is not yet 3 and if she has an accident, oh well, she'll clean it up and we will change Chloe's pants. No big deal. And it wasn't a big deal to Chloe. I stopped bugging her and she did just fine. No accidents.

Just as we left Mommy & Me to go home and have lunch I realized that Chloe would be without me during pre-school. What would she do? Could she tell her teacher she had to go potty? Oh no! As the fear and worry began to possess me once again, I told myself to let it go and not to worry. Whatever happens would happen and it's not a big deal. So, I took Chloe to pre-school where she promptly entered and told her pal Claire that she was a big girl too. I guess her sense of being a big girl has also given her a new sense of empowerment as she also told a little boy in class that she didn't like him kissing her (I wish she would have also told him that her mom didn't like him wiping his boogers on her either). You go girl! After telling her teacher that she was in panties, I left only to return some two hours later eager to see if she was in the same pants. And you know what? She was!

So, I am making a vow to stop hovering and go with the flow (figuratively and perhaps literally).

Spring Has Sprung!!

Monday, April 23, 2007 No comments
Finally! I thought our winter coats would never be put away. Spring decided to make a glorious appearance this weekend and has decided to stay around. The sun is bright, the birds are chirping and the sounds of children playing in the yard can be heard all over.

Chloe is one of those kids out in the yard. The lid has come off the sand box and she is running throughout the backyard with Lizzie the dog. We took full advantage of the beautiful weather to clean up the yard on Saturday and then to enjoy Matt's Porsche autocross on Sunday. Chloe and I brought a picnic to the event and sat in the back of the SUV watching the cars. I got a little sun too!

Today promises to reach the high 80s so Chloe and I have been in the back yard once again. She has spent most of the morning chasing bugs. I have added a video of her, I thought it was cute even though she is getting a little grouchy because her nap time was approaching.

HAZMAT suit needed

Tuesday, April 17, 2007 1 comment

In the pre-Chloe days I was employed as a middle school history teacher. People would always bestow blessings on me when they learned my occupation and tell me what a "tough age" I taught. Well, I am here to say that I will gladly take a room of 30 8th graders over a room of 6 pre-schoolers any day!

Today was my day to be the co-oping mom at pre-school. This wasn't my first day in the classroom, it was just my first day as the co-oping parent during allergy season. I spent the majority of my time wiping runny noses or wiping the streaky snot off a three-year olds face or repeatedly saying, "don't pick your nose". And, I had boogers wiped on me 3 different times by the same child. I won't sit by him again during circle time and will carry a nose suction next time. I feel as though I am covered in mucus and serving as a petri dish for every known germ.

I co-op again in two weeks and am possibly considering a HAZMAT suit for the assignment. I say bless you to all the pre-school teachers out there, what a tough age!

One Year in the Garden State

Saturday, April 14, 2007 1 comment
Today marks one year that we have officially resided in the Garden State (our brief stay in the Jersey City Marriott certainly DOESN'T count).

Below are some highlights and accomplishments as residents of Jersey:
  • Matt is well-versed in communting by bus, train or car in NYC.
  • Chloe started pre-school and we participate in a weekly Mommy & Me class.
  • Shannon joined our local Newcomer's group and will serve on the Board for the next year.
  • Shannon transferred her membership to the local Junior League and will begin active status in the fall.
  • Matt got a new hobby car, his 1987 Porsche.
  • Matt's company continues to grow and build clients in NYC.
  • We only have to drive a short distance to find ourselves in Boston, Philadelphia, the shore, and NYC. (If you drive a long distance in Texas, you still find yourself in Texas.)
  • Have the heat on for 7 months out of the year instead of air conditioning (like Texas).

Of course, a lot more has happened since moving to Jersey, those are things just off the top of my head. I think our 1st year is well-documented on this blog.

Here's to the 2nd year in Jersey!

A Birthday Wish

Friday, April 13, 2007 No comments
Why can't a child have a live monkey for her birthday? Here's a conversation Chloe and I had today.

Chloe: "When's my birthday?"
Me: "In June. It's April now. You have to get through the rest of this month and then May before it is June."
Chloe: "My birthday is June. I get to blow out candles and get presents."
Me: "Indeed. What present do you want for your birthday?"
Chloe: "A monkey."
Me: "A stuffed animal monkey? You have two already."
Chloe: "NO! A monkey that will give me licks for kisses."
Me: "A real monkey?"
Chloe: "Yes, silly."
Me: "I don't think Mommy & Daddy are allowed to give you a real monkey."
Chloe: "Why not a real monkey?"
Me: "Because."
Chloe: "Oh."

Two Fish...Three Fish

Wednesday, April 11, 2007 No comments
Blame me. I take full responsibility. I assumed I had the knowledge to keep my child’s Betta fish alive and healthy. I don’t, but I am learning. You see I kept a 30 gallon tank with the SAME fish for 6 years, in fact one still resides in that tank at my parents, going on year 7. But, that doesn’t mean I know Bettas.

After returning from Texas, I checked in on Bingo II and Bob II (ok, it’s time I admit that Bob I, given to us by our neighbor who no longer wanted to care for him, passed on a month ago. Chloe was so attached to him at that point that I replaced him with a look-alike, Bob II). They appeared to be doing well. I changed their water and fed them. All was right in Bingo II and Bob II land – so I thought. Yesterday morning, Bingo II did not tap on his tank to greet me when I got Chloe out of bed as is customary. Instead, he just slowly swam in one spot, lethargic. Oh, no. I added a drop of Betta medicine to his bowl hoping it would pick him up.

Well, after pre-school I went to put Chloe down for her nap and low and behold, Bob II was deceased. What! He appeared totally normal that morning. It was Bingo II that had concerned me. Poor Bob II had suffered from a quick onset of fin rot, which Bingo II also had. Since, Bingo II acted lethargic in the a.m., he got the medicine and was still alive, barely.

Not thinking I could pass Bob II as “asleep” for too much longer, after Chloe’s nap we went to Petco and picked up two new Bettas, one red (the new Bingo III) and one blue (he new Bob III). I was pre-emptive in purchasing Bingo III believing Bingo II was not long for this world.

So, we now have 3 Bettas. Two Bingos and one Bob. How is Bingo II? After another dose of Betta meds he appears to be making a recovery though he is now playing the role of Spike, Bingo's cousin, who is visiting (as he still may make an exit).

Gone To Texas...

I was so looking forward to the warm weather of Texas for our Easter Break. Of course, it seems the cold winds of the NE followed us south. Chloe and I experienced one day of warm weather before it turned chilly.

We had a great time though it seemed a little rushed and we weren’t able to fit in all the stops we wanted on this trip. Chloe was able to spend some quality playtime with her cousins Bryn & Gemma on Friday and Saturday. Chloe and I were also able to visit PaPaw’s farm and Chloe was able to see some chickens, guinea fowl & ride on the tractor. We also managed to find the perfect spot for the obligatory Texas springtime photo in the bluebonnets.

Easter day was a bit chilly and we didn’t even dress Chloe in her Easter outfit. We visited our friends Bryan & Sue and had a late afternoon Easter meal & egg hunt with Shannon’s parents.

We returned home Monday to the chilly spring weather and still dreaming of warmth.

I May Not Have Been Born in Texas, but I Got Here as Soon as I Could...
